Here are just a few examples of our Long Term Disability appeal case wins against MetLife.
James – Blacksmith – Portland, Indiana
Pancreatitis
Disability benefits due to chronic pancreatitis and severe abdominal pain. Although the claim was initially approved, benefits were later discontinued after MetLife reviewed the file and cited a lapse in ongoing medical treatment as support for the position that symptoms had improved and a return to work was possible.
The Fields Law attorneys moved the appeal forward with a disciplined, documentation-first approach. The Fields team advised a prompt return to treating providers, obtained updated medical records, and requested narrative reports addressing the inability to safely perform such strenuous, high-heat work. Using this evidence, the attorneys filed an appeal detailing errors and omissions in the insurer’s review of the medical records and occupational demands. After receiving the appeal and supporting documentation, MetLife reversed the denial and reinstated Long Term Disability benefits.
Shane – Mine Maintenance Electrician – Caldwell, Idaho
Chronic Back Pain and Failed Back Syndrome
A mine maintenance electrician in Idaho stopped working in 2020 due to chronic back pain and failed back syndrome. Long Term Disability benefits were initially approved through MetLife, but the insurer later denied the claim when the policy’s definition of disability changed, creating an immediate loss of expected income and added pressure tied to appeal deadlines.
Fields Law stepped in to manage communications with the insurance company and prepare a focused administrative appeal supported by clear medical and occupational evidence. The appeal resulted in a reversal of the denial, securing months of backpay and the reinstatement of ongoing benefits, and the Fields team remained engaged at each stage to keep the process organized and moving forward.
Billy – Store Manager – Beckley, West Virginia
Diabetic Nephropathy, Chronic Kidney Disease, Hypertension, Coronary Artery Disease
A manager of a Kroger’s grocery store in West Virginia suffered from a number of different conditions. After attempting to continue working despite his condition, he soon realized he simply couldn’t work. After applying for Short Term Disability benefits, his insurer denied his claim. Their denial claimed that the medical information available did not provide clinical findings that would preclude him from working.
Not sure what he should do, he reached out to Fields Law. After completing his review of our client’s file from Metlife, our attorneys developed a plan to fight the denial. We updated medical records and obtained a report from our client’s treating doctor and drafted a winning appeal. Metlife reversed their decision and reinstated the client’s benefits and paid all the past-due benefits. Our client was relieved and grateful to have his sole source of income back.
